UISD Earns Top Scores in State Safety and Security Audits

UISD is exceeding standards for safety and security as set by the State of Texas. The District received a 100% rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Texas School Safety Center (TXSSC).

The score is based on safety audits conducted by the Region One Education Service Center. Intruder Detection Audits are done annually at school campuses statewide to help improve security and ensure a safe environment for students and staff. The audits are not meant to simulate an intrusion, but to find and address vulnerabilities to ensure safety and security for students and staff.

UISD is the largest school district in Region One to score perfectly in the Intruder Detection Audits. Most school districts to score 100% are much smaller.

UISD’s campus principals ensure compliance with all safety and security policies as mandated by the State of Texas. United High School Principal Jessica Salazar expressed that it is an essential part of her responsibilities. “At United High School, safety isn't simply a policy; it's a commitment we uphold every day. We strive to ensure that every student's journey is one of learning, growth, and security,” she said.

Juarez Lincoln Elementary Principal Roberto Ortiz highlighted the importance of teamwork in ensuring security. He said, “As educators, we are entrusted with the most valuable part of our community - our children.  As the proud principal of Juarez-Lincoln Elementary School, I can attest to the fact that my colleagues and I on sister campuses are on the same page relative to campus safety.  This 100% compliance on the safety audits is definitive proof that all of us are doing what needs to be done when it comes to the safety of our students and staff.  Safety may be inconvenient for some, but it is paramount for those of us standing at the doors to our campuses.”

Clark Middle School Principal Michelle Gomez echoed Mr. Ortiz’s thoughts on the matter while emphasizing that a safe environment is most conducive to learning. "At Clark Middle School safety is our first priority. We want our students to feel secure and protected when on campus. Providing a safe environment has a positive effect on academic achievement and at CMS we want our students to focus on learning when they enter those doors every morning," she said.

UISD Safety and Crisis Manager Ruben Ayala, who oversees safety and security at all campuses and facilities districtwide, applauded the efforts of all UISD staff in ensuring safety and security. “We want to congratulate all of our campus for a great job regarding the Intruder Detection Audits that are conducted by the Region One Service Center under the direction of The Texas School Safety Center and the Texas Education Agency.  We want to thank our Administrators, Police Officers, Teachers, Staff, and Students, because it is through their dedication to keep our schools safe that we were able to have 100% of audited campuses receive zero finding and zero corrective actions for the 2023-2024 school year.  This demonstrates that we are United for Safety,” he said.

United ISD takes the security and wellbeing of our students and staff very seriously, and takes  every measure to ensure the safety of everyone at our schools.
