Federal and State Compensatory Programs Office oversee United I.S.D.’s After School Adventures (ASA) Program at 25 elementary campuses. Campuses that do not have an ASA program are Cuellar, Juarez-Lincoln, Kennedy-Zapata, and Roosevelt. The program provides affordable child care for working parents of United I.S.D. children during the hours of operation of 3:00-6:00 pm.
The program is sufficient and is maintained solely on tuition fees paid by parents. The program services approximately 1,800 students annually and continues to grow. ASA has one full-time coordinator, one community partnership/activity officer, thirteen professional supervisors, one program secretary, 25 head caregivers and over 220 caregivers/substitutes.
ASA supervisors (District teachers during the day) oversee approximately 2-4 campuses each. The caregiver to student ratios is approximately 15:1 (12:1 for Pre-K and K).
ASA students are served a light and nutritious snack daily, upon arrival. In addition to homework assistance, students participate in hands-on activities all afternoon. The program has incorporated the “Let’s Move ASA” initiative, after First Lady, Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move USA”. The initiative’s goal is to have school children remain active and healthy by providing physical activities. ASA students participate in exercise/dance activities from 4-4:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.
ASA’s Community Partnership officer oversees all activities and community presentations & involvement during the school year. ASA’s goal is to provide a quality program, complementary to the school experiences of the participating children.
