Dr. Imelda De La Rosa of UISD selected for prestigious fellowship

Dr. Imelda De La Rosa of the United Independent School District has been selected to participate in the prestigious Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellowship.

Dr. De La Rosa currently teaches science at Salvador Garcia Middle School. She serves as Science Pathfinder at her campus, where she collaborates, identifies department goals, and focuses, guides, reviews and offers feedback on teachers’ lessons. She provides leadership to accelerate student academic achievement.

The fellowship program, according to teachplus.org, is a “highly selective leadership opportunity for outstanding Texas teachers looking to deepen their knowledge of education policy and gain a voice in decisions that affect their students and the teaching profession.”

Starting in July and ending in June 2025, fellows will participate in two in-person training sessions. They will also have monthly virtual meetings and smaller issues-focused working programs. The kick-off for the program will be in Austin from July 15-July 17th.

“As SGMS Science Pathfinder, I will be the voice of my campus, but most importantly, an advocate for my students who represent the special populations that we, as educators, work so passionately to help succeed,” Dr. De La Rosa said.

Fellows receive a $1,500 stipend for their commitment and they receive training by experts who are key stakeholders. Teach Plus recruits Policy Fellows from across the state. In the past, these fellows have testified at the Texas Legislature, conducted research, successfully advocated for policy changes, and published policy briefs, according to teachplus.org

Dr. De La Rosa’s previous experience includes being team leader, which entails leading teachers of different content areas with an emphasis on student success and team collaboration; frontrunner leader, which involves representing her campus and helping disseminate initiatives; Science department head; and 6th grade Science lead.

She has also been the recipient of several awards. She has been a School Bell Award recipient representing United ISD, Teacher of the Year nominee at the previous district where she worked, TIA designated educator, and selected as Top Educators of America 2019-2020 by the Who's Who Directories. She is currently seeking National Board certification in the area of Science Early Adolescence. Dr. De La Rosa currently holds a Bachelors in Biology and History with secondary certification; a Masters in Science Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Reading; and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.
