United ISD Dedicates New Clark Elementary School with Ceremony

UISD dedicated the new Clark Elementary School with a ribbon cutting and grand ceremony while meeting an important milestone since passing the 2013 school bondThis new campus marks one of the last projects to be funded by it. The school is located at 400 W. Mayberry Street, next to Mall Del Norte. The original school was established in 1973.

UISD has placed great emphasis on updating school facilities and buildings, and this celebration was the culmination of the work of many UISD administrators and staff, including Board Member for District 5, Javier Montemayor, Jr. who was one of the guest speakers at the event along with Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz and Clark Elementary Principal Gabriela N. Perez.

Also present at the event held October 3 in the school's new multi-purpose gymnasium were district leaders including Board President Ramiro Veliz and Board Secretary Michelle Molina, school staff and students. The event included music by the Clark Middle School Mighty Huskies Band, Clark Elementary School Choir, a Presentation of Colors by the John B. Alexander High School JROTC, a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Eleanor Coronado, Clark Elementary music teacher.  The Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge were led by students Carlos K. Valdez and Kara R. De La Cruz.

Following the ceremony, guests had the opportunity to tour the facility and see first-hand many of its modern and safety features. The single story building, totaling more than 87,000 square feet, has 27 classrooms and was built to serve approximately 600 young students. The main building entrance incorporates a high tech security station. The four corners of the school are anchored by a community-friendly library and computer lab, an inviting cafeteria, an administrative hub, and an enlarged multi –purpose gymnasium.

The grand entrance of the school displays a photo of Norman Clark who came to Laredo with family from Massachusetts looking for opportunities in land ownership and farming.  After a successful career in farming, he would eventually donate this land to the school district. UISD remembered his generosity which has touched the lives of thousands of students over the years.

A video presentation included images from the school, past and present, and district leaders presented the Clark Elementary principal and staff with an aerial photograph of the new building and its students. Everyone was invited to take a tour of the new state-of-the-art school.
