Our Future Leaders Present Key Topics to UISD Administration

A creative group of students who are a part of the United ISD Superintendent’s Student Advisory committee were tasked with special projects. The future leaders from Alexander, United South, Lyndon B. Johnson and United High School worked together to pinpoint how to better their schools and advocate for their peers. The key topics they selected included Mental Health/Wellness, Anti-Bullying/Safety, Anti-Vaping and a Mentorship program. Sadie Mares, an LBJ student, expresses why her group focused on mental health, “With our generation, it’s an issue that has been evolving and is becoming more widespread. More people are going through mental health and they are struggling with it. A lot of people feel like they are alone.” When asked how she felt about the latest feedback she added, “I feel like I am being heard now. The advisory committee is listening to us and finally getting a new perspective from the students that are coming in.”

All of them did an excellent job conveying their message to our administration, including our Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gerardo Cruz and Associate Superintendent of Administration and Student Services, Rebecca C. Morales who took note and are working with them to continue to not only better their education but their safety and well-being as well.

The next meeting will be held next month. The high school students will take each project a step further, as they coordinate plans of action for several ideas they have, such as Public Service Announcements, events, and other unity projects throughout the district.
