The John B. Alexander High School (AHS) Band and Elite Dazzler Dance Team made a remarkable appearance at the UIL State Marching Band Contest held at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Monday, November 11. Out of 249 6-A high school bands from across the state of Texas, only 40 were selected to compete in this prestigious and highly competitive event, and the Mighty Bulldog Band earned a well-deserved spot among them.
AHS was one of only two bands in Area G, which covers Laredo to Brownsville, to participate in the contest. This marks the band's 6th appearance at the UIL State Marching Band Contest and their fourth consecutive year qualifying for this prestigious honor. Their continued success speaks to the hard work, talent, and dedication of both the students and their directors. “It’s truly a humbling and fulfilling experience where our musicians and performers had the opportunity to showcase their abilities that they have grown and developed in the Marching Arts through countless hours of dedication and preparation,” expressed AHS Director of Bands, Joshua Martinez. “The smiles, tears, and expressions of gratitude were seen and felt throughout their entire performance by the directors, parents, and audience at this event, and were elevated at the realization that they were able to do so on such a grand stage.”
The Mighty Bulldog Band is led by Head Director Joshua A. Martinez, with support from Assistant Directors Ricardo Fuentes, Jose C. Martinez, Armando Blanco, Adam Dinkins, and Camden Sidenstricker. Additionally, the Elite Dazzler Dance Team, known for their dynamic performances, is directed by Kendra Pena.
“The Alexander High School Band and Elite Dazzler Dance Team’s exceptional performance at the state contest concludes a truly extraordinary marching season,” said UISD Superintendent, Dr. Gerardo Cruz. “Their dedication and excellence continue to make a significant impact in the local and statewide music and arts communities.”
The Director of Fine Arts, Gerardo Rodriguez acknowledged it takes a village to achieve this success and said he is proud to support the Mighty Bulldog Band, “I am extremely proud of their monumental achievement. It is a testament to their hard work and dedication."
