United Independent School District has been awarded a Gold Score Recognition by the American Heart Association for enhancing creative wellness programming and offerings to employees.
“I am so proud of UISD. They are trailblazers in wellness,” said Cordelia Sarabia, Employee Wellness Program Coordinator. “I am honored to be a part of this group who has created a culture of wellness in the workplace.”
The recognition in the AHA 2024 Well-being Works Better Scorecard represents a notable commitment to the health of its workforce and community.
Built on the Association’s 100-year history of saving and improving lives, the Scorecard brings together emerging research and input from leading experts to help employers create a healthy and effective work environment. Organizations earn a recognition level based on their adherence to the Association’s science-based recommended practices in areas such as health equity, burnout prevention, compensation and benefits, and more.
“This recognition is a true testament to the UISD Employee Wellness committee, administrators, and Board of Trustees hard work,” Sarabia said. “UISD receiving this type of honor demonstrates the value that they see in having happy healthy employees.”
For the 24-25 academic year, a 12-week weight loss program, and a mental wellness program have been added to the list of wellness initiatives, according to Sarabia. “In addition to these programs, the Employee Wellness Committee is planning new activities like yoga or Zumba, and mindful art sessions for mental health,” she added.
Participation, as well as wellness activities, have doubled in the last two years.
Sarabia is the full-time onsite Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texa Health Coordinator. Arabia and her assistant, Sharon Leal, are part of a committee of employee volunteers who are dedicated to employee wellness. UISD also has a network of 60 Wellness Champions at the campus level. Activities include walking challenges, volleyball tournaments and worksite health screenings.
