Roosevelt Elementary holds successful career day

Representatives from different careers across the community visited Roosevelt Elementary students for a Career Day.

Students were enthusiastic throughout the morning, donning yellow hard hats, participating in science experiments and asking question after question of the 36 presenters.

KGNS-TV and Telemundo Laredo weather forecaster Yolanda Villarreal talked to first graders on Thursday about weather and demonstrated to students the concept of rain by using plastic cups, shaving cream, tap water and blue food coloring. Students marveled at their creations.

“I am talking to the kids in first grade about how weather is, the different types of weather we have and safety because sometimes we have extreme heat here in South Texas,” Villarreal said during a break. “Some of the kids were asking me, ‘Hey, what happened with the snow?’ We didn’t get any snow because we had a winter storm affecting parts of Texas where some parts got lots of snow and for us here our main hazard was ice and lots of road closures.”

She stressed to the students that it’s very important that people follow the weather forecasts regularly so they can plan their days.

Villarreal said that even though the students are young, it’s important to introduce them to different careers.

“They have all these opportunities. It doesn’t just have to be a weather forecaster. There’s lots of industries. You could become a policeman or policewoman or border patrol or a librarian … it is very good to come to these kids,” Villarreal added.

“You can inspire them and you can be that huge spark and they can become something huge and big,” she said.

Students wearing yellow hard hats in another classroom listened to a presentation from GGJ Construction LLC. The presenters stressed that students should work hard, obtain an education and could work in construction or be business owners in the future.

And a florist from HEB showed students how to make floral arrangements.

Patricia Gallegos, Roosevelt Elementary counselor, said such presentations were important.

“I think it’s really important to expose our children to the different careers that people have and the different skills that they bring to talk to the students because the students also need something to strive for … every child wants to be someone when they grow up so they need to be exposed to different opportunities,” Gallegos said. “By hosting career day, there is that opportunity for them to know what’s out there and know what they can be when they grow up.”
