Registrars from across the United Independent School District gathered at the Student Activity Center and were showered with praise during their special Registrars Appreciation Week.
This year’s theme is Registrars Make a World of Difference, and the UISD registrars certainly do.
Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz offered an encouraging speech and told the registrars that “the work you do is very vital.”
“I was a campus principal for many years and I always relied on the registrars. You are the first line when the parents come in. You are greeting them, helping them with the enrollment process and making sure it’s a very smooth enrollment process and making sure the parents bring all the necessary documents,” Dr. Cruz told the registrars.
“I support you and I understand your role and your role is vital,” he added.
Registrars were treated to breakfast, uplifting speeches and cake.
Thelma Martinez, director of Admissions, Attendance and Dropout Recovery, said that the registrars “are at the forefront.”
“That means that when parents walk into our schools, they are the first person that greets them, that meets them, that sees how they are able to help,” Martinez said. “So that sets the tone for our parents, for our community, for students.”
She said registrars at UISD are passionate about their jobs and they multitask all day.
“They have many, many responsibilities … and they do a wonderful job of meeting everybody’s needs. The registrars deal with teachers for grades, they deal with parents for registering, special admissions, they deal with administrators and central office staff and with curriculum and instruction,” Martinez said.
“Everyday should be Registrar Day,” she added.
Marisa Garza, a registrar at Amparo Gutierrez Elementary, has been a registrar for 18 years and said she loves her job.
“I like meeting people, getting to know them better and I love meeting our parents. I just like greeting people everyday. I enjoy what I do, especially the challenges,” she said.
During the meeting, registrars were also updated on policies and procedures.
