The United Independent School District (UISD) is proud to announce the promotion of Emma J. Rodriguez to Dean of Early College High School at John B. Alexander High School. Previously serving as an assistant principal at Lyndon B. Johnson High School, Rodriguez brings more than 27 years of experience in education, including 13 years as a high school counselor and six years in administration.
Rodriguez is eager to take on her new role, emphasizing her commitment to student success. “I am beyond thrilled and honored for this opportunity,” she said. “My goal is to ensure that over 90% of our students earn an associate degree while completing their high school diploma. I am committed to increasing college readiness and providing career exploration opportunities that will empower our students to achieve their fullest potential.”
She has a vision for student success in college, careers and beyond.
As Dean of Early College, Rodriguez will oversee the program’s operations, ensuring students have access to resources that support their academic journey. “This role allows me to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives,” she explained. “The Early College High School program is a unique partnership between Alexander High School and Laredo College. By increasing the number of students enrolling in and graduating from college, we’re directly investing in the future of our community.”
She brings a legacy of leadership and student advocacy to her new position.
"We are excited to have Ms. Emma Rodriguez join our Bulldog family as the new Early College Dean," said Alexander Principal Rosana Arizola. "Ms. Rodriguez brings a wealth of experience in secondary education, college partnerships and strong commitment to student success. As we continue to expand opportunities for our students through early college initiatives, Ms. Rodriguez will play a key role in fostering academic excellence, supporting our students in their journey. We look forward to the positive impact Ms. Rodriguez will have on our students and community."
Her primary responsibilities will include developing and implementing comprehensive student support systems, including a lottery-based selection process, college readiness initiatives, and progress monitoring; assisting in program design, goal setting, and budget management; fostering collaboration among district leaders, school administrators, teachers, parents, and Laredo College; and overseeing the daily operations of the program, including resource management and policy implementation.
Rodriguez’s extensive background in counseling and administration has shaped her passion for student success. As a counselor, she guided students through graduation, the college admissions process, scholarship applications, and dual credit opportunities, supporting their academic, career, social, and emotional development.
As an assistant principal, she led the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department, helping students gain workforce skills and industry-based certifications. “I take pride in seeing students graduate with occupational skills that prepare them for their careers or further education,” she said.
Rodriguez's experience uniquely qualifies her for this leadership role. “My background in counseling, college and career readiness, and administration has equipped me with the skills to guide students through the Early College program successfully,” she said. “Building strong relationships with students, parents, educators, and our partners at Laredo College will be key to our success.”
She has vast experience and education, holding positions as an assistant principal, high school and middle school counselor, special education teacher, adjunct professor, and department head.
She earned her Bachelor’s in Special Education and Master’s in School Counseling & Licensed Professional Counselor Certification from Texas A&M International University, and a Principal Certification from the Region One Educator Preparation Program.
Born in San Antonio, TX, and raised in Laredo, Rodriguez is a family-oriented individual who strongly values personal growth and her relationship with her family. “My three children and aunt are the center of my life,” she said proudly. Her eldest son is a chef in West Texas, her middle son works in sales in San Antonio, and her daughter, a graduate of LBJ’s Early College High School, and of Laredo College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonographer program is a self-taught fashion designer.
Rodriguez’s journey has been shaped by her time at Sacred Heart Children’s Home, where she lived during her middle and high school years. “The nuns provided my family and me with love, care, and guidance. I am eternally grateful for their kindness, which has left a lasting impact in my life,” she shared.
Outside of her career, Rodriguez enjoys spending time with family, staying active through walking, yoga, and fitness. She also loves comedy, concerts, plays, reading and exploring new restaurants.
