Empowering UISD Parents through Digital Literacy Program, Graduates Receive Laptops

Nearly two dozen United ISD parents have taken a significant step toward a brighter future after completing the district’s Digital Literacy Training Program. UISD Federal Programs in collaboration with Goodwill Career Services, provided parents with essential computer skills to help them navigate the digital world and open doors to new opportunities.

The training began in January and included three computer literacy courses. Parents learned to use email, Microsoft Word, and Excel and even completed resume-writing workshops. For UISD mother of four, Julieta Quiroga, the program was a life-changing experience. “It was December of 2024, and I got a ParentSquare message that said, ‘Basic computer skills.’ I thought, ‘OK, I might be outdated,’” Quiroga said. “I did it. I was happy to come to class every day. I was ready. I learned, and I would do it again! I loved it, and now I want more programs. I’m not going to stop here, I’m getting my pharmacy technician certification in May. I’m a housewife right now, but what if I want to work? These certificates are going to help me, so I truly thank UISD for offering this.”

Upon completion, graduates received certificates and laptops to continue their learning, help them complete online tasks or even prepare them for the workforce.

“If they are interested in learning new skills, they shouldn’t be afraid to come in,” said Denise Collins, UISD Family and Community Engagement Coordinator. “We work with our parents, whether it’s computer literacy or other workforce skills. Our instructors support them every step of the way. They are never alone.”

Participants attended training sessions at either Goodwill’s north location or UISD’s Family Matters Resource Center in the southern part of town. The program’s first cohort of 20 students saw high engagement and completion rates, a success that motivates both UISD and Goodwill to continue this partnership and offer more of these training opportunities.

“Our mission at Goodwill is to change lives through the power of work,” said Angelique De Oliveira, Goodwill’s Chief Workforce Development Officer.  “We know that most jobs now require some level of computer literacy, and these skills are also essential for everyday life. Whether it's accessing financial resources, healthcare, or job searching. We wanted to be a resource for the community, and UISD recognized the need for digital literacy, so we joined forces to offer this class.”

For many parents, the training provided more than just technical skills, it built confidence. Juanny Alvarado, a UISD mother of three, shared how the program transformed her outlook. “Antes tenía miedo de mandar un email equivocado. Ahora me siento capacitada, segura y confiada,” Alvarado got emotional as she she explained in Spanish. “Hasta obtuve mi diploma de maestra sustituta. Para mí, el cielo es el límite. ¡Hay que seguir adelante!”

For UISD families, the program represents more than a class, it’s a pathway to independence and new possibilities. By learning digital skills, parents not only enrich their own lives but also set an inspiring example for their children.

“Being able to use the internet safely, conduct job searches, and access online education is critical for success in today’s world,” De Oliveira said. “It’s all about giving people the tools they need to build a better future.”

UISD Federal Programs looks forward to continuing its partnership with Goodwill Career Services to identify and develop additional programs that better serve families in the district.
