From the Silver Screen to the Classroom: AHS Early Birds Connect Literature, Film, and Resilience

Special guest Emilio Girón Fernández de Jáuregui, iconic child actor “El Torito,” shares a life shaped by perseverance with UISD students.
Literature opened the door. Mexican cinema brought the stories to life. A unique collaborative lesson gave local high school students a personal connection to both.
The Alexander High School Bulldogs welcomed United High School Longhorns in the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Early Birds program, who tuned in virtually via Google Meet, for a special visit with Mr. Emilio Girón Fernández de Jáuregui. Famously known for his role as “El Torito” in the classic 1984 Mexican film Ustedes los ricos, starring Pedro Infante, Mr. Girón received a warm welcome from both the Bulldogs and Longhorns.
Led by AHS Spanish Department Chairperson Mrs. Sylvia Vargas, adjunct professor Mrs. Guadalupe Aguiar, and UHS educator Mrs. Viridiana Rodriguez, students have been exploring the deep connections between Juan Rulfo’s short story “Es que somos muy pobres” and classic Mexican cinema. Their studies examine how poverty, loss, family bonds, and social inequality shape characters’ lives-and how those themes resonate far beyond the page and screen.
For United ISD students, meeting the actor behind "El Torito" offered an extraordinary opportunity to connect their academic work with a life shaped by perseverance. Girón Fernández de Jáuregui was just 13 months old when he appeared alongside Pedro Infante in one of Mexican cinema’s most unforgettable roles.
Although his character’s story ends tragically, his own life unfolded into a powerful story of resilience. After losing both parents during childhood, he eventually settled in Nuevo Laredo with an uncle, where he pursued his education, met his future wife, and began building a career in business.
A graduate of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas in Nuevo Laredo with a background in accounting and auditing, he went on to establish a career encompassing entrepreneurship and public service. His community contributions earned him a nomination for Tamaulipas’ Medalla al Mérito Luis García Arellano in 2025. He has also helped preserve Mexican cultural heritage by organizing tributes to Pedro Infante.
For Alexander and United High School’s Early Birds, this encounter connected literary analysis with the human experience behind a cinematic legacy, offering a meaningful perspective on adversity and the determination to build a future.
UISD, through Alexander High School and United High School, extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Girón Fernández de Jáuregui for sharing this special learning opportunity with its students, and to Mrs. Vargas, Mrs. Aguiar and Mrs. V. Rodriguez for bringing literature, culture, and community together.
“Our sincere thanks to Mrs. Lorena Girón , UISD diagnostician and daughter of Mr. Giron for being a liaison for this project to take place,” shared Mrs.Vargas, AHS Spanish Department Chairperson.
Across two cities and generations, stories continue to connect us and education gives those connections lasting meaning.
